MIZUNAMI, Gifu The Earth Corridor museum in this central Japan city, established in 1993 using the remains of an underground factory dug during the Pacific War, will close at the end of March due to deterioration, and local people who regret the end of an era are visiting the facility one after another.
The theme of the museum is to get people thinking about the Earth. While walking through the 240-meter-long underground trench, visitors can learn about the history of the Earth from its birth 4.6 billion years ago to the emergence of mankind through panels and videos. NAGOYA (Kyodo) Nagoya Castle s two iconic golden statues of a mythical half-tiger, half-fish creature were taken down Monday to spend several months on exhibition in the central Japan city.

An annual ritual of washing glue off brightly colored carp streamers in cold water has begun at the Gojo River in the central Japan city of Iwakura, Aichi Prefecture. On Jan. 18, 2021, Hiroaki Matsuura, 49, who works at the Nakashimaya carp streamer shop, laid out the streamers in the river whose water temperature was 12 degrees Celsius before using a knife to carefully trace along the cloths patterns to scrape away remaining glue, and remove dirt from the surfaces with a brush. The cold water brought out the dye s bright colors, and the eyes and scales shone vividly in the water. The work usually takes place during the coldest period of the year in preparation for Tango no Sekku, or Children s Day, which is celebrated on May 5, and continues through the end of March. INUYAMA, Aichi Yakushima macaques gathered around a bonfire to warm themselves up at the Japan Monkey Centre in this central Japan city on Dec. 20, apparently delighted by the heat from the flames amid the severe winter cold.
The annual bonfire event started on Dec. 20 for some 140 Yakushima macaques a Japanese monkey subspecies and will also be held on Dec. 21, the winter solstice, and on every weekend and public holiday until Jan. 31 next year. ....
