ROYAL OAK Fans and supporters of the 80-year-old Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak scrambled to organize a way to preserve the historic site after its sudden shuttering last June, but now a proposal is coming before the Royal Oak Planning Commission that would tear down the building to make way
METRO DETROIT Three C & G Newspapers staff writers and the Royal Oak Review recently won accolades from the Michigan Press Association’s annual Better Newspaper Contest in the weekly Class A category circulation over 15,000.
The Main Art Theatre has been a beacon of independent cinema for 80 years, but plans to tear it down have sparked a rally from community members, desperate to find a way to keep it standing.
City staff confirmed that an affiliate of Bloomfield Township-based A.F. Jonna Development LLC has submitted plans to tear down the theater at 118 N. Main St. at 11 Mile Road and replace it with a five-story mixed-use building.
