Big brother Owen is set to lead Wiltshire at the English Schools Championships TWO-times medallist Owen Merrett heads a strong Wiltshire squad for the English Schools’ Championships this weekend, writes Kevin Fahey. The Sheldon School athlete won a bronze medal in the inter boys’ hammer when this event was last held in 2019; last year’s championships were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Merrett was also a bronze medal winner as a junior boy in 2018 and on present form, which sees him third on the UK Rankings for under 20 men, he stands a good chance of making the podium again at his first attempt in the senior boys’ age group.

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns star George Lebese has been nominated for the Colorado Springs Switchbacks Goal of the Year award.
Lebese enjoyed a solid debut season abroad with the Switchbacks, scoring twice in 16 USL Championship appearances, including an incredible long-range effort during the club s historic four-goal comeback against Austin Bold in August.
With his side having fallen 4-0 behind at half-time, Lebese completed the remarkable turnaround when he unleashed a left-footed screamer from the edge of the box passed the outstretched arms of Bold shot-stopper Diego Restrepo.
The 31-year-old Bafana Bafana international s sublime effort has now been nominated as one of the two finalists for the Switchbacks Goal of the Season award, alongside Aidan Daniels belter against New Mexico United last month.
