Jason Walker, 39, East Ninth Street, Salem, appeared at a hearing before Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge Anthony Donofrio. Court records show Walker had pleaded guilty Feb. 24 to charges of attempted unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, importuning / soliciting an adolescent and resisting arrest. A charge of possessing criminal tools was dismissed. Walker is one of 14 men arrested in Mahoning County last October as the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force and Sheriff Jerry Greene’s office participated in Operation Autumn Hope.

YOUNGSTOWN Operation Steel Penguins is kicking off in the city to add “additional layers” of protection for residents, the mayor and police chief announced Tuesday. The name is slightly different from the Operation Steel Penguin that took place a few years ago, but its goal is the same: To bring together local, state and federal agencies to target criminal activity, especially gun offenses. Mayor Jamael Tito Brown started his remarks about the operation by pointing to a video that students and educators at Taft Elementary School on the city’s South Side recently created called “We Are Peace We are Taft.”

Accused bomb maker in fed custody | News, Sports, Jobs

YOUNGSTOWN A city man accused of having homemade bombs in his Hillman Street home on the South Side now is detained in federal custody after a hearing in U.S. District Court. A criminal complaint filed Jan. 11 alleges Oliver Smith, 51, possessed explosive materials, a firearm and a gun silencer. He was not allowed to have these items because of a previous felony conviction. The case began with a Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent being informed in early October that Smith had a firearm and silencer at his home in the 2800 block of Hillman Street, according to an affidavit in support of a criminal complaint filed against Smith by U.S. attorneys.
