As India faces a second wave of COVID-19 restrictions, the trend of people refraining from unnecessary travel is already emerging.
Google’s latest Mobility Report shows that there’s a nationwide drop of 22% of people heading to shopping malls, cinemas, restaurants and cafes.
The most drastic dip is in the state of Maharashtra, which currently has the highest number of COVID-19 infections in the country, with a 39% dip in retail and recreation mobility.Cases of COVID-19 are beginning to spike for a second time in India and the worst-hit states are already seeing lockdown trends re-emerge. COVID-19: Maharashtra, Punjab reporting highest daily cases
Maharashtra and Punjab are the two worst-hit states in terms of their share in the total number of new cases and fatalities across the country in the last fortnight, according to official documents.
The two states also top the charts among states or UTs that have crossed their ever-reported peaks for new cases and are followed by Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh and Gujarat in the top-five, shows a presentation made by the Union Health Ministry during the last review meeting held by the Cabinet Secretary with all states and union territories.
The growth rate of the last seven days for daily new cases till March 23 in Maharashtra was 3.6 per cent and in Punjab, it was 3.2 per cent. ....

Buldhana:  Police have registered a case against 1,011 people for allegedly violating COVID-19 prevention rules by attending a religious gathering in Maharashtra’s Buldhana district, an official said on Sunday.
The incident took place on Friday when the people took out the annual ‘Sandal yatra’ to the shrine of Sailani Baba here, despite such gatherings not being allowed due to a rise in COVID-19 cases, Sub-Divisional Officer of Police Ramesh Barkate said. ....

Maharashtra records 49,447 new coronavirus cases, 277 deaths
Maharashtra recorded as many as 49,447 coronavirus cases on Saturday, taking the tally of infections in the state to 27,13,875, the death toll increased to 55,656 with 277 new fatalities.
As many as 37,821 patients were discharged from hospitals, taking the number of recovered patients to 24,95,315. The number of active cases stands at 4,01,172.
Mumbai set another record by reporting 9,108 COVID-19 cases, the highest single-day rise, taking its caseload to 4,41,282. Twenty-seven deaths in the state capital took the toll to 11,751.
Maharashtra s recovery rate of COVID-19 cases is 84.49 per cent, while the fatality rate is 1.88 per cent.
Currently, 21,57,135 people are in home quarantine and 18,994 are in institutional quarantine. ....
