Subscriber only A 71-year-old Ipswich disability pensioner has failed in a bid for bail as he faces charges of stalking three police officers and a senior court officer online. Russell Gordon Haig Mathews, from Booval, appeared from jail via video-link before Ipswich Magistrates Court on Wednesday to make his application, citing his fear of catching COVID-19 while on remand. Mathews is charged with unlawfully stalking a senior court registrar between January 1 and February 2 this year; three charges of stalking police; contravening an order about electronically stored information; and failing to appear at court on December 11 last year. Mathews is defending the charges based on his held belief that he was exercising his right to freedom of political communication.

A PRISONER who threw his urine into the face of a jail officer has faced court this week, but will not spend any more time locked up.
Appearing before Ipswich Magistrates Court from jail via video-link, Casey James McColm, 22, from Coominya, pleaded guilty to 36 offences including five counts of unlawful use of stolen motor vehicles; two counts of stealing; seven counts of entering premises and stealing; two of attempting to enter premises with intent to steal; enter dwelling with intent to steal; attempted fraud; trespass; three charges of being in possession of dangerous drugs; possession of property used in a drug offence; possession of drug utensils; four breaches of his bail conditions; and serious assault on a corrective services officer when in jail at Arthur Gorrie at Wacol on September 1 last year.

Subscriber only A RESIDENT of the City View Hotel in Ipswich has been granted bail following an Easter Monday incident that resulted in a man suffering a broken ankle. Rodney Arthur Clements, 38, from West Ipswich, appeared via watch-house video-link before Ipswich Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with committing an assault causing grievous bodily harm at Brisbane St on Monday, April 5. Prosecutor Senior Constable Bridie O Shea said police opposed bail. Written police facts were handed up to Magistrate David Shepherd to read. Nothing of the allegation was read onto the public record. In making the bail application, lawyer Matthew Fairclough said Clements resided at the hotel and would abide by any curfew if bail was granted.
