AUSTIN, Texas - A comprehensive report from a committee tasked to look at the University of Texas at Austin s alma mater song has been released and one of the committee s findings was that the intent of The Eyes of Texas was not overtly racist.
The committee went on to say that it is similarly clear that the cultural milieu that produced it was. And the fact that the song was, for decades, sung and revered on a segregated campus has, understandably, blurred the lines between intent and historical and contemporary impact. This complicates its understanding and explains how different people experienced the song in vastly ....

Hard-Hit But Resilient: 'Voces Of A Pandemic' Reflects The Latino COVID-19 Experience

San Antonio residents mourn the loss of those who died in 2020 at an ofrenda in Confluence Park. The event honored those lost to COVID-19, and butterflies tagged in their honor were released during the event.
Latinos have been particularly hard hit by COVID-19 in Texas. Texas virus expert Dr. Peter Hotez has said the community has faced decimation from the illness.
The Voces of a Pandemic project is meant to be a small salve for that suffering. Oral historian and project founder Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez, who s also a journalism professor at the University of Texas at Austin, told Texas Standard that though many project participants were vulnerable to illness and more, they were determined to share their stories. ....

'Voces of the Pandemic' Documents the Latinx Experience - Austin Monthly Magazine

Sitting in her car one afternoon in July, 25-year-old graduate student Julia Araujo shared her reactions to the COVID-19 outbreak through a video call. While interviewer Dominique Montiel Valle listened on the other side of the screen, Araujo described the mental toll the lockdown took on her, including daily panic attacks and desperate phone calls to her parents. The conversation is one of nearly 100 interviews that the team of the Voces Oral History Center has conducted as part of its new project, Voces of a Pandemic, which seeks to illustrate the ways in which the Latinx community has been affected by COVID-19.  ....
