one way to think about the scale of that, one way to keep track of it is to keep up with the ticker on the new york times front page. everybody case numbers are slightly different. they all end up at the same place, but the nbc numbers are as of 6:30. the new york times numbers are a little behind that. they don t show 50,000, but are close. they have the raw number. every day the new york times also posts on their front page the 14-day change, how much that number has risen. we are up 82% over the past 14 days as a country. that is explosive growth in terms of our epidemic. 82% increase in cases over 14 days? since we don t have much of a national strategy and the states are being left to do this on their own, one other way to look at the numbers to grasp this pickle we are in is to do what the washington post is doing where they count up the number of states where the daily number of new cases are on the rise. there are new reports of infection this week compared to l
switching gears, as we head into the holiday weekend, a new record for coronavirus cases in the u.s. on wednesday, more than 50,000 cases were reported in a span of 24 hours for the very first time. according to the new york times, that is the fifth record in the past eight days. in all, there have been nearly 2.7 million cases and more than 129,000 americans have lost their lives from coronavirus. to stop the spread, the governor of california has reimposed a lockdown in a total of 19 counties closing bars and other businesses for the next three weeks. and pennsylvania has joined at least a dozen other states mandating face masks must be warn in public. in all, at least 19 states have put their reopening plans on pause or started to roll them back. i promise that will impact the economy. texas is one of the states that s been reversing course as cases and hospitalizations hit another all-time high yesterday. my colleague david gura is in houston. david, were the hospitals

lisa: portland has now experienced 50 straight days of left-wing violence. last night a violent mob attempted to overrun a police station and burn it to the ground. they have toppled statues, destroyed property, and attacked the police. one report from earlier this week. according to police, not only did protesters take over the streets but threw rocks, bottles and more last night. police say one officer was hurt when a brick was thrown at him. police say that protesters interfered with interest and pointed lasers at their eyes. lisa: portland s leaders have failed to rein in the violence. it s not clear they are even trying. instead they are passing blame on the federal law enforcement officer trying to restore order. here s portland s mayor, ted wheeler. what i have a problem with is them leaving the facilities, going out on the streets of this community and escalating an already tense situation like they did the other night. lisa: got that? law enforcement is res
