Valley News - Local roundup: Thetford's Marshis tosses no-hitter to top Oxbow

Local roundup: Thetford’s Marshis tosses no-hitter to top Oxbow Ethan Marshia Modified: 5/22/2021 11:42:30 PM BRADFORD, Vt. Two of Thetford Academy baseball’s three losses this season have been no-hitters. On Saturday at Oxbow High, the Panthers were finally on the right side of that feat. Junior Ethan Marshia dominated against the Olympians, holding them hitless in a 4-0 Thetford win. Two walks and an error separated Marshia from a perfect game. He struck out eight in his complete-game no-hitter. “Ethan pitched extremely well today,” Panthers head coach Phil Chaput said. “He mostly used his fastball to keep Oxbow hitters off balance early and used his breaking ball in the late innings to continue to keep them off balance.”

The Lebanon High girls lacrosse team escaped Kearsarge with a second straight hard-fought win on Thursday afternoon, an 8-6 nailbiter over the Cougars in summer-like conditions. The win is the second this week for the Raiders (9-3) over Kearsarge following an 11-10 win in Lebanon on Tuesday. Catherine Cole led a balanced effort for the Raiders with three goals and an assist. “Overall, it was a great team effort. It’s a lot to play two tough games in three days against the same team,” Lebanon coach Sara Ecker said. “The girls came out focused and read to play today, having made some adjustments at practice yesterday.”

Hanover boys tennis (5-2) won its third straight match, this time a 6-3 overtaking of Alvirne on the road. HHS went 5-1 in singles matches. Junior Evan Yang (8-3), junior Kevin Pillsbury (8-5), sophomore Zhiwen Liu (8-2), senior Alex Stevens (8-3), and junior Charlie Birkmeyer (8-0) emerged victorious. Hanover head coach Jarrod Shaheen spoke highly of Alvirne’s sportsmanship before praising his team’s performance. “Evan had no trouble taking a win at the top of the ladder, and Kevin played a hard-fought match that was back and forth until he pulled away at the end. His hustle was incredible,” Hanover head coach Jarrod Shaheen said. “Zhiwen, Alex S., and Charlie rounded out very nice performances down the ladder to clinch the win. At doubles, Alex S. and Kevin played a phenomenal match against an athletic team to eke it out in the end.”
