The white wall is a few feet larger than the six-by-six goal she guards during games. The enlarged eyes of Rameses UNC’s mascot stare back at her behind the three words “WE GET TO” in bold Carolina blue. Like her teammates, Moreno pats the mural as part of a pregame ritual. The redshirt senior from Huntington, N.Y., however, placed a hand on it before anyone else and can describe the display in minute detail. She painted it. ....

Can North Carolina be one of the best teams ever? As high school freshmen, Katie Hoeg and Kerrigan Miller made a pact to play college lacrosse together. They didn’t play for the same high school but met as fifth-grade club teammates and later played with the Long Island Yellow Jackets. Both top-tier recruits, they visited five colleges together and liked the same ones. Hoeg committed first, to North Carolina in the fall of her sophomore year. Miller liked the Tar Heels too, but she was torn. The University of Southern California had a rising team she also liked, and she had always dreamed of that California sun.
