Subscriber only An expert says Mackay s commercial real estate sector will continue weathering the worst of COVID-19 as more businesses invest in the region.
Retail Major commercial real estate player Collier International stated online retail sales in the eight months to August 2020 had surged by more than 80 per cent. It explained this had translated into retailers looking for warehouse spaces to fulfil orders. Explore Property commercial director Jordan Millers said there had been good demand in the Mackay area over the past 12 months from bulky goods retailers looking for well-exposed properties. There s a couple of new players, Mr Miller said.

Christmas has come early for Mackay residents as the final touches for the North Mackay Rotary Lookout are completed.
Work on the lookout began in January 2020, but completion of the project was delayed by a few months because of social distancing restrictions.
The $1.42 million upgrade works involved replacing the current observation deck with an architecturally designed viewing platform.

The second stage will transform the existing site into an enforcement dog and cattery building with the entire project expected to be finished by May 2022. The designs for the $3.3 million upgrade to the Mackay Animal Management Centre.
Mackay Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson said earlier this year that prior to COVID-19, the current centre was reaching capacity two to three times a month.
“We (had) to rely very heavily on moving them out through the RSPCA or other animal welfare groups,” Cr Williamson said.
