Call for 'doggy pensions' after mother's fatal mauling

The mauling death of a Maryborough woman has prompted a Mackay councillor to introduce a new fee scale that would reward owners for doing the right thing.
Amanda Campbell, 41, was fatally mauled by three unregistered dogs in a horror attack that stunned the state and sparked debate at Mackay council chambers.
Councillor Martin Bella suggested a doggy pension scheme be introduced in Mackay that would reward pet owners who annually renewed registration.
Cr Bella said the system would remove fees entirely in the dogs’ later years.
He suggested that, after a set number of years of annual registration, residents would not have to pay the fee for the remaining duration of their pet’s life. ....

Council impounding more than five cats each week


More than five cats are impounded in Mackay each week as they roam outside property boundaries.
Mackay Regional Council Community and Client Services director Angela Hays said out of the 189 cats collected since July, 28 were euthanised because they were too aggressive for rehoming.
That equated to about one feral cat being destroyed every 13 days.
Mackay residents were now calling for a curfew to stop the free-roaming felines getting their claws on native wildlife.
When the
Daily Mercury asked readers on Facebook about the idea, all 66 comments were in favour.
