North Macedonia's first Jewish lawmaker quickly broke taboos - and was hit with antisemitism

(JTA) Politics was supposed to be a very brief interlude in Rashela Mizrahi’s career as a scientist.
A 39-year-old Jewish fertility researcher from North Macedonia, she was appointed last year to serve for 100 days as the temporary minister of labor in her Balkan country, situated north of Greece. She was deemed a good nonpartisan pick to serve as a placeholder ahead of elections.
“I had zero interest in politics,” Mizrahi told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. “But I thought it’d send a good message for women. Plus, like any Jewish daughter, I wanted to make my parents proud.” ....

'Political antisemitism' in North Macedonia ?


Rashela was born and raised in Skopje, Macedonia’s capital but her family roots are from Toledo, Spain.
In an interview with European Jewish Press, Rashela Mizrahi, an important member of the Jewish community of Macedonia and the country’s first-ever  Jewish government member, reported the ‘’political’’ antisemitic abuses she faced  when she was fired from the cabinet last year after she appeared at a press conference with signs of the country’s previous name, Macedonia.
