When I considered retiring, I researched potential volunteering opportunities. I’m not good with children, feared that I’d want to take all the dogs and cats home with me if I worked at an animal shelter, and didn’t feel strong enough to help at hospitals or hospices after going through the slow death of a very close friend from ovarian cancer.
Pretzels. I love to eat them, but I’m not too good at turning myself into one. So yoga has always been a bit of a stretch for me (pun intended). Nor am I Buddhist or fond of what’s commonly known as “woo-woo.” Give me straight talk anytime.

A few weeks ago, I hiked 2,300 feet up to Tahquitz Peak in Idyllwild with my good friend Kathy Panzl. She’s 62, and I’m 68. It was challenging, but we did it.
