Contractors are taking the iconic Lyle Fountain in Cathcart Square. It is being removed for restoration works costing over £50,000. The fountain will be transported to Wigan, where it will be returned to its former glory by a specialist restoration company. Restoration of the famous fountain, which was gifted to the town in 1880, is expected to take around four months. The work is expected to cost £56,000 and Municipal Buildings bosses say the timeframe may change, depending on the condition of the ironwork once it has been descaled and stripped of paint. A spokesperson for Inverclyde Council said: The Lyle Fountain is an iconic feature of Greenock town centre enjoyed by many a resident and visitor over the last 141 years. ....

Only one contractor considered suitable to carry out the restoration of the Cathcart Square landmark has come back - with a bid so high that the figure is not disclosed in a report to elected members. The local authority wants to return the drinking fountain gifted to the town by sugar magnate Abram Lyle in 1880 to its former glory.
