San Diego's arts institutions cry out as mayor maintains 50% reduction in city funding into 2022


The San Diego Art Institute saw its city funding plummet from $46,000 in 2019-20 to only $17,000 in 2020-21. It has since merged with another museum to create the new Institute of Contemporary Art
San Diego arts organisations are still struggling from last year’s 50% cut in the city’s arts and culture budget, which Mayor Kevin Falcouner instituted to offset lost tax revenue in the early months of the pandemic. These cuts now remain in the mayor’s proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year, despite the pandemic easing in the US, which has institutions deeply concerned about their future and urging leaders to reconsider. ....

Column: Vanity plate gets lots of mileage for good cause


For more than 25 years,
Patti Cooprider has been scooting around town in her car with the personalized license plate: “I ♥ ART.”
Anyone who knew her was aware that ART was not a person but a passion.
Patti lived and breathed art in all forms painting, music, theater, dance. She and her husband, Coop, once visited sculptor
Henry Moore at his English estate and
Marc Chagall in France.
She was an artist who painted nearly every day, a ceramics maker, collector, patron and an enthusiastic coordinator of events supporting the arts.
So, it is not surprising to anyone who knew Patti that, even after she passed away of cancer Jan. 4, with her husband’s help, she still is supporting the arts. ....

To say that there’s more than meets the eye when observing the artwork of
Baseera Khan would be an understatement. Deep within the materials Khan uses in multidisciplinary projects are both inner explorations and experiences with and within a complex world.
“I think about material and its production and infrastructure and how it influences economies,” said Khan, who is the current artist-in-residence at
Lux Art Institute in Encinitas and whose works are on exhibit there through June 5. Khan said of the creative process: “I think about some geopolitical things, some historical timelines, and then I hone in on the material based on how it actually creates identity.” ....
