Sixty years ago this week, a new Governor set North Carolina on a new course.
In his inauguration speech on January 5, 1961, Terry Sanford said the state should build its future not on low taxes, but on better education. Calling education “the rock upon which I will build the house of my administration,” he said:
“We must give our children the quality of education which they need to keep up in this rapidly advancing, scientific, complex world.
“They must be prepared to compete with the best in the nation, and I dedicate my public life to the proposition that education must be of a quality which is second to none. A second-rate education can only mean a second-rate future for North Carolina.” ....

As a member of one of the most popular groups in jazz, he was a star. But as a Black musician in an otherwise all-white ensemble, he sometimes confronted racism.

Eugene Wright, a distinguished bass player who toured the world and recorded some 30 albums, including the landmark “Time Out,” in his decade with the Dave Brubeck Quartet, died on Dec. 30 in the Valley Glen neighborhood of Los Angeles. He was 97. ....

a number of things but it really, the point i wanted to start with is that if you are like me and grew up in this country, you would have taken it for granted that teams like north carolina state and georgia tech would be playing on saturdays. they would garner a great deal of attention. they d be they be on television and radio. you would read about them on the sports page and people would care about what happened. thousands of people would go to these games, but the united states is the only country in the world that has universities that do this sort of thing, that have what you would have to call commercial sports. because if you look at the north carolina state football team, and it s the same in this respect as north carolina, duke, wake forest. in most respects the foot wall program at these colleges looks and feels and walks a lot like a professional team. and actually when they are tossed out on espn, they are actually, the teams are actually treated as a franc ....
