Building supply stores see record sales during pandemic, but many unhappy with DIY renovations

After a year of living through a pandemic, the numbers are in and business has been exceptional for building supply retailers. Good, bad or ugly, people have been renovating their home and a new report finds that not all ‘Do It Yourself-ers’ are happy with their finished product.
“Business has been awesome,” said Frank Clarke, operations manager with Lumber World in Saanich. “It has been very good.”
“Since the beginning of the pandemic we’ve been swamped with customers. They’re all isolating at home, they have backyard projects,” he said.
Through the spring of last year, Lumber World saw a 50 per cent increase in sales for things like decking and fencing. ....

Lumber prices hit historic high on Vancouver Island

At the start of the pandemic, Vancouver Island lumber mills had to stop production and close down while at the same time, B.C.’s construction industry continued to hum along. 
Now, the law of supply and demand has sent the price of materials through the roof. 
“I think that built up demand that they couldn’t meet and now they’re trying to fill those orders,” said Roy Kulmala, CEO of the Vancouver Island Construction Association. 
“Lumber prices have basically doubled since this time last year,” added Frank Clarke, operations manager at Lumber World in Saanich. “Plywood has done the same. Stuff like OSB (oriented strand board) has actually tripled in price.” ....
