Loch on the brink of clinching World Cup luge overall title January 16, 2021 GMT OBERHOF, Germany (AP) Felix Loch is about to reclaim his title as World Cup luge overall champion. The two-time Olympic champion from Germany is now virtually assured of claiming the seasonlong men’s overall title for the seventh time after dominating yet another race Saturday. He was a quarter-second faster than Austria’s Jonas Mueller for the win, his eighth in nine races this season. Austria’s David Gleirscher was third, one spot ahead of Germany’s Johannes Ludwig. Loch now has 855 standings points with three World Cup races left, 290 points ahead of Ludwig with a maximum of 300 points remaining to be claimed this season. Loch basically needs to just finish one of the season’s final races to clinch the points title, no matter what Ludwig does. ....

Loch got his seventh win in eight races this season on Saturday, prevailing over fellow German slider Johannes Ludwig by nearly one-quarter of a second and extending his standings lead to 250 points with only four races remaining. One hundred points go to the winner of each race, with 85 for second, 70 for third and decreasing totals from there. Loch assuming he and Ludwig appear in all four of the remaining races would need to average only ninth-place finishes to win the overall points crown. He has 755 points while Ludwig is second 505. ....

Geisenberger, also of Germany, finished second her seventh silver medal in seven races this season. Madeleine Egle of Austria took third. Geisenberger now has 595 points on the season as she seeks an eighth overall title in nine years; she didn’t compete last season after giving birth to her first child. Taubitz, last season’s overall women’s champion, has 591 points. ....
