Lubbock has lost a distinguished judge, leader, and friend with the death of Texas 72nd District Court Judge Ruben Reyes, County Judge Curtis Parrish said. Reyes died from complications of COVID-19. He was 56. Throughout his tenure, he was known for his judicial fairness, and for his unwavering advocacy for specialty courts, including the Lubbock County Drug Court, Parrish said in a statement. His support of specialty courts was recognized nationally, as he was elected to chair the National Association of Drug Court Professionals in 2015.
Governor Perry appointed Reyes to the bench in 2006. He was then a partner at Hurley, Reyes and Guinn. The Honorable Judge Reyes won re-election multiple times since then, to the court that covers both Lubbock and Crosby counties.Â
