State Aid Based on Misleading School Enrollment Figures to 'Shortchange' Haverhill $2 Million

A formula the state uses to determine how much money public schools should receive in aid next year leaves Haverhill shortchanged by more than $2 million.
The Haverhill School Committee agreed last week to ask Gov. Charlie Baker to adjust the formula after member Richard J. Rosa noted it is based on the number of students enrolled the previous year. He explained that measurement is flawed because it is artificially low due to the coronavirus.
“Essentially what’s happening is we’re going to be asked at some point the School Committee to pass a budget that we know isn’t going to be enough to account for the couple hundred or more students that are going to come back into the district in September,” he explained. ....

VFW Lorraine Post 29 Offers Veterans and Families Free Easter Dinner; Call by April 1

Veterans and their families in Haverhill are being treated to a free Easter ham dinner courtesy of Haverhill’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Lorraine Post 29.
All meals will be prepared and delivered on Saturday, April 3, and will just need to be reheated on Easter Sunday, April 4.
“While we wait for things to get better, we want the Veterans of Haverhill to know we are here for them and we care about them. To us, these veterans are our family,” said Post 29 Senior Vice Commander Shawn Watkins. Watkins said last year’s two VFW meal deliveries served more than 800 meals combined and have proven to be a great way to stay connected with veterans in Haverhill d ....

Three months after Haverhill Police Chief Alan R. DeNaro asked for a social worker to help police, his wish was granted Friday after two high-profile incidents of violence which may have mental health causes.
When he appeared before the City Council in December, DeNaro cited suicides, drug overdoses, domestic violence, runaways and other situations where a social worker would be helpful in defusing immediate problems and getting help for individuals as well. Last week, DeNaro renewed his call for help. ....

Haverhill Mayor James J. Fiorentini plans to thank health care workers and volunteers who have helped the city get through the pandemic when he delivers his annual State of the City speech next week.
The mayor said Monday his “Salute to The City’s Health Care Workers” will “give an overview of the challenges and obstacles the city and its residents have endured and overcame in the past year while also laying out his vision and plans to lead the pandemic recovery finally on the horizon.” ....
