BRETTON WOODS â The Appalachian Mountain Club has created the new Lynda Cohen Performing Arts Series, which will offer two free concerts this summer. Presenting the musical acts Beg, Steal, and Borrow and Low Lily, both concerts will be hosted at the AMC Highland Center in Crawford Notch, located in the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire. Concerts are open to the public and preregistration for attendees is required.
Originating from her love of music and the mountains, AMC member and long-time supporter Lynda Cohen imagined a concert series where people from far and wide could come together, nestled among the peaks of Crawford Notch, to experience one of her lifelong passions, music. Local alt-rock band Dinosaur Jr. is back with a new album, “Sweep It Into Space” sounding better than ever.
When the classic lineup of J Mascis on vocals/guitar, Lou Barlow on bass/vocals and Murph on drums reunited in 2005, fans were thrilled but not all that hopeful. Tensions between Mascis and Barlow, which led to Barlow being ousted from the band in 1989 (Murph split in 1993), have been well documented, so it was easy to understand why many thought this reunion would be short- =lived. But Dinosaur Jr. proved the naysayers wrong, the group has now been together longer than their first time around and they have created some of the best music of their career. “Sweep It Into Space,” is a testament to the band’s undeniable chemistry and it’s a work that rivals some of their output from the late 1980s.

Liz Simmons could be considered a multi-tasker of sorts. A prime mover in the harmonious Vermont -based folk/bluegrass trio Low Lily, she purveys a sound flush with a warm embrace, as serene as a soft mid-winter’s fire’s glow. With her gentle alto vocal, she turns each song on her new solo album
Poets into a gentle caress, a sound so soft and beguiling it can soothe even the most troubled soul. Her version of Sandy Denny’s mournful classic “Who Knows Where the Time Goes” is a perfect case in point; while the song has had innumerable interpretations, few are as quiet and contemplative as the read Simmons offers here.
