Clarke Immigration Law said in a blog post on its website the money it receives for immigration and refugee cases through legal aid which pays lawyers' fees when clients can't afford it isn't enough.
The increase makes Manitoba's lowest wage the third-highest among the provinces behind B.C. and Ontario, which pay minimum wage workers $16.75 and $16.55 an hour, respectively. But despite the increase, some feel it's still not a livable wage in the province.
Advocates for refugees in Manitoba fear a recent change in Canada-U.S. border policy will hurt more people fleeing persecution than reduce harm, as intended.
