However, Director Tony Fuhrmann of Madison County Employment and Training (MCET), said the figures are misleading.
“There isn’t an employment issue, there’s an employee issue,” he said, explaining people are simply not interested in finding work yet.
The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) released local March unemployment figures Thursday.
According to IDES data, the unemployment rate for the St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Bond, Calhoun, Clinton, Jersey, Macoupin, Madison, Monroe and St. Clair counties, remained at 5.6%. The state rate dropped to 7.1% in March from 7.8% the previous month.
