Judge Neville Camilleri has called for specialised inquiring magistrates to be appointed alongside magistrates who deal with the normal caseload in his first court sitting.
Camilleri, 47, had served for 10 years as a magistrate before being selected as a judge of the superior courts.
In his inaugural sitting this afternoon, Camilleri promised that his ethos would not change from his days in the lower courts: “Be on time and be prepared.” ....

Lombard Bank claims FIAU breached its rights

Lombard Bank has filed a constitutional court case claiming that it had been denied a fair hearing when the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit slapped it with a €340,000 fine over alleged money laundering offences.
This is the fifth constitutional court case which the FIAU is facing.
In its application filed against the FIAU and the State Advocate, the bank called on the court to declare that the FIAU investigation and the fine it imposed following its findings were arbitrary and breached its fundamental right to a fair hearing. The bank argued that the law gave the FIAU the power to act as investigator, prosecutor, and judge. ....

'Watered-down' bill to regulate lawyers dismays Chamber of Advocates

The new law proposed by the government to regulate the legal profession is “unacceptable” as it is a far cry from what had been discussed with lawyers prior to its publication.
The Bill to amend the Code of Organisation and Civil Procedure and the Commission for the Administration of Justice Act include provisions aimed at regulating the profession but come nowhere close to it, Chamber of Advocates president Louis DeGabriele told
Times of Malta.
“We think the Bill as proposed by the justice minister does not effectively address regulating the profession. Half-baked? Well, I think it’s less than half-baked. ....
