Angola celebrates Sojourner Truth Week June 1-6

ANGOLA â Angola will start June with a celebration of abolitionist and suffragette Sojourner Truth.
Truth spent about a month in Steuben County surrounding the time she gave a speech on June 2, 1861, at the Steuben County Courthouse. Speaking out against slavery and in favor of the Civil War, Truth stood 6-feet tall in the face of local Republicans and anti-abolitionist Democrats alike who sought to arrest her for even stepping foot in the state, let alone protesting.
In recognition of her deeds, the Downtown Angola Coalition commissioned a statue of Truth from Indiana native James Haire. It will be unveiled in the northwest corner of the Steuben County courtyard on Sunday, June 6. ....

HPC seeking to photograph, document farmstead slated for demolition

ANGOLA â The Angola Historic Preservation Commission has decided to write to the Indiana Department of Transportation requesting it be given time to photograph and document a Pleasant Township farmstead before it is bulldozed to make room for a traffic circle.
The Commission on Tuesday voted to respond to a letter it received from the state agency about a property at 1025 N. C.R. 200W that is slated for potential demolition as part of an upcoming intersection improvement project.
The letter, which was in response to a request for a review of the site to determine if it had historic potential, claimed the 9-acre property, which contains a house and three outbuildings, does not appear to meet the criteria for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places and is therefore not worth preserving. ....

Celebrate poetry month in Angola

ANGOLA â You can celebrate National Poetry month all April long with various events and activities scheduled to take place in and around Angola.
Now in its 25th year, National Poetry Month was introduced in 1996 by the American Academy of Poets to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry throughout the United States.
In years past, celebrations in Angola have included a daily poetry reading on the Public Square in front of the Brokaw Movie House with storyteller, Trine University professor and columnist for this newspaper Lou Ann Homan.
This year, however, Homan said sheâs approaching poetry month another way.
âI am doing poetry month a little differently, but fun,â she said. ....
