这一习俗源于民间的传说。
进入雨季，雨水断断续续，延绵数月，潮湿霉变困扰着人们的生活，这种天气大致要至农历五月初五的“五月节”过后才会结束。这一天，家家煎饼，喻为堵上天庭破漏的窟窿，好让人间过上干爽的日子。说来也神奇，吃过麦饼，天气果然开始转晴，此后的日子，除了台风带来的大雨，基本都是晴热。
