MEBANE, N.C. Mebane City Council has approved economic incentives for Lotus Bakeries.
City leaders approved $600,000 in cash grants plus, a max waiver of building permit and inspection fees worth $100,000. Leaders approved the incentives Monday night during their meeting.
Lotus Bakeries will invest $60 million and plans to create 86 new jobs at its current facility. The company makes little Lotus Biscoff cookies that airplanes give to passengers or you can buy them at the grocery store. They also make a variety of other products. ....

Alamance commissioners say no to more incentives for Mebane cookie maker

The Alamance County Board of Commissioners turned down Lotus Bakeries third request for incentives since 2016 in a split vote Monday.
“I am concerned this is the third time,” said Commissioner Pam Thompson. “Is there going to be a fourth?”
Commissioner Craig Turner was recused because he and his law firm have represented Lotus in the past. So when Thompson and Commissioner Bill Lashley voted no, tying with Commissioners Steve Carter and John Paisley voting yes, the motion to approve a new package of $600,000 in county incentives failed.
“As a biz person I would suggest to you – don’t do it; you can stand on you’re own two feet; you don’t need our taxpayers’ money,” said Commissioner Bill Lashley. “I wish I could vote for this, but I cannot vote for incentives.” ....
