here s kabc. reporter: here the movie costumes are the stars from clash of the titans to the dazzling but brief numbers from burlesque with all their sparkle. for the 19th year the fashion institute of design and merchandising is opening its exhibit featuring 21 costumes for movies from the past year, including oscar nominees for best costume design. this year s contenders are all dazzling but different. and the offerings have something in common, says fidm instructor and fashion designer nick verreos. a lot of time costume designs are made for the movies. what i find interesting about this year s costumes are the detail and how really good they look up close. reporter: alice in wonderland is nominated for best costume design and changing the look of an iconic figure was intimidating even for two-time academy award winner colleen atwood. thankfully we were saved by the script because alice didn t have to wear the same blue dress

she s drawing a lot of flack. she went from being super she went from being super skinny at age 16 she was 5 9 and weighed 95 pounds. she had a serious eating disorder. even wrote a memoir about it called hungry and then went between a size 10 and 14, finally came out and said the industry has too many problems. now these images have popped up. and she s talking about them. take a listen. a lot of people said the industry was pressuring me. my agency was pressuring me. i was pressuring me. but it was just not the case. the most important thing we all need to know, whether you re a model, a normal person walking around, you re an editor, photographer, anybody out in the world, it s about individual health. she s basically saying people are criticizing her because she can t categorize her. i think one of her message is don t try to categorize anyone. plus size doesn t have to look a certain way.
