Against the backdrop of Vietnam and Civil Rights, 1960's Appalachia was economically depressed; unemployment and sustained poverty were the norm. Perched atop Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau, Crossville was a waypoint to other, more promising places. The rural farm town was known as a "Sundown Town," totally intolerant of diversity. People of color knew to been gone by sunset.

The asphalt ribbon of Interstate 40 connecting Crossville to the greater world had still not arrived when Mr. Paul Crabtree wheeled in from Los Angeles with seven children and his wife, Broadway actress/model Mary Ducey Crabtree.

The talented Crabtrees had basked in the Golden Age of Theater, marking Broadway careers in legendary Broadway productions. But as the Crabtree clan arrived Crossville, Paul was an out of work scriptwriter, recently released from Hollywood's Emmy award-winning network television series, "The Lorretta Young Show."
