American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter Patty Sakal who worked at coronavirus press briefings died on Friday from COVID-19 complications.
Sakal, who was 62, dedicated over 40 years to working various interpreter jobs for the deaf community in Hawaii. 
The mom-of-three was visiting one of her daughters in San Diego, California when she suddenly fell ill, her sister Lorna Mouton Riff told
Sakal was placed on a ventilator after suffering from breathing problems and intestinal symptoms. 
We made that difficult decision to take her off of the ventilator and let her go in peace, Mouton Riff told ....

An American Sign Language interpreter who helped keep the deaf community informed during Covid-19 press briefings in Hawaii has died from the virus.
Patty Sakal, 62, passed away on Friday morning at Alvarado Hospital Medical Center in La Mesa, California during a trip to visit family, her sister Lorna Mouton Riff told CNN. Her health rapidly declined after testing positive for the virus and she was unable to return home to Hawaii, Riff said.
Sakal was a well-known advocate for the deaf community in Honolulu. A child to deaf parents, she was raised in the community and dedicated her life to offering interpreting services in her 40-year career, Riff said. ....

One of the most familiar faces during Hawaii’s COVID-19 pandemic, the woman who interpreted the official press briefings for the deaf community, has died after contracting the virus while visiting her daughter in California.
Patty Sakal, 62, a mother of three and grandmother of two, stood alongside Gov. David Ige and former Honolulu mayor Kirk Caldwell for months, signing their warnings and announcements.
