WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Charges have been dismissed against the director of the Columbus County Animal Shelter and her estranged husband.
Loretta Shipman was charged with pointing a gun, trespassing and injury to personal property in March while her estranged husband, Perry McCollum, was charged with assault on a female and assault by pointing a gun in April.
All charges were dismissed earlier this month.
Shipman, who has been out on medical leave, announced she will not return to the position and is retiring. ....

COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - One of the first steps Sheriff Jody Greene took after being named interim director of the Columbus County Animal Shelter was to bring state inspectors in for a look.
“If you look back to the inspections, they were never up to par, so yes, I reached out to (the state). They came down and met with us. They gave us their expectations and that’s what we’ve got to strive for,” said Sheriff Jody Greene. ....

COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - After a closed session and no public discussion, the Columbus County Board of Commissioners appointed Sheriff Jody Greene as the interim Animal Control Manager on Monday night.
The move came at the second half of the Commissioner’s meeting following a closed session. A motion was made to appoint Greene to the interim role starting at 8 a.m. on Tuesday - but as for any reasons why - they did not say. ....

COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - Two of the three dogs that were stolen from the Columbus County Animal Shelter during a recent break-in have been returned to their owner, according to officials.
The two dogs, Bella and Bentley, both white poodles, belong to Loretta Shipman, the shelter’s director. She dropped the dogs off at the shelter for a foster parent to pick them up to look after them while she recovered from surgery, according to a shelter spokesperson. ....
