Randolph County folklore highlighted in new highway marker program


Drowned in a deep river by her lover in 1807, Naomi Wise s story lives on as people come to visit the Randleman marker, sharing the tale that has been known locally for hundreds of years. 
Folklore expresses the heart and identity behind a community s stories, music, and other knowledge that one generation passes to another. Organizations such as the William G. Pomeroy Foundation offer to construct highway signs observing those stories from local communities, including Randolph County s famous Naomi Wise tale.
The foundation s Legend & Lore Marker Grant Program promotes cultural tourism and commemorates legends and folklore as part of local heritage. Randolph County residents have been open about the Wise folklore, leading it to be the first marker of the program erected in 2019 by the North Randolph Historical Society and the City of Randleman. ....

Communities in Missouri have an opportunity to put their town or city’s folklore in the spotlight this bicentennial year. 
Grants for the Legends & Lore Roadside Marker program is funded fully by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, which established the program to promote cultural tourism and celebrate legends and folklore as part of local and state heritage. Missouri is one of 11 states eligible to receive the grant. 
The Missouri Folks Arts Program at the University of Missouri is the state’s organizer for the grant and invites communities across the state to participate. 
“We are excited to join colleagues across the country as a Legends & Lore state partner – and to be the first to represent the Midwest,” says Lisa L.
