That there was an earlier moment and it links up with the story, so the very first instance in which he talks about slavery communist slavery, he is in this quasimemoir called redbird which he publishes i think, i government when, maybe in 18541849. I dont really remember the day. Theres this passage where he comes across this monument in liverpool, the character that represents him, as he had been to liverpool. The monument is of lord nelson, and [laughter] ill go back to looking the monument is the lord nelson and expiring at the moment of his victory against the french. Its this crazy statue or every other nelson stature in britain is very simple if you think about nelson in london, lord nelson up on top of the pedestal. I come at it he comes at it as a historian, and i come at it as a reader of his book but also as a reader of melville, and it seems kind of well fitting that we should be meeting in the New York Public Library to talk about, i think, unambiguous toly the greatest new yorker ever lived, melville. If you could go bac back in r time who would you want to be . First i wouldnt really want to go back to their time. Life was very hard and the women who say its hard i cant do it all i think they are kind of a bunch of sissies. [laughter] because it was hard to live in the 18th century. You didnt have any conveniences of course and you would have terrible things happen in your family. Even with all of that, they cannot so much about what was happening in the country even though they could vote on all of those they still involve so i admire them tremendously, but i wouldnt want to be any one of them. [inaudible] when i was younger that i want to be a writer . Not really, but i always wrote. I was always a good writer. And so i found i did in fact enjoy writing.
