It’s an understatement to say the Scottish Hate Crime Bill has been the subject of significant controversy.
Tomorrow MSPs will debate it one last time before it goes to a final vote. They must put free speech before party politics. ....

Our very liberty has come to a pretty pass when the Government has to appoint a ‘free speech champion” to the board of the Office for Students.
But, such is the indoctrination of those within higher education, that this is exactly what is proposed.
The fightback has started, and about time.
Of course, fashions and attitudes change, but there shouldn’t be a penalty for following one’s own beliefs.
Increasingly on social media, anyone daring to put their head above the parapet has been ‘cancelled’ or ‘deplatformed’ for disagreeing with them.
More seriously, jobs have been lost and reputations destroyed, particularly in academia, where, for example, traditional views on sex and gender are unacceptable. ....

Police force continues to mislead public on 'hate crime' despite apology

Merseyside Police is continuing to mislead the public over hate crimes, despite making an apology over a woefully inaccurate campaign poster.
The force claimed on a public billboard and on social media that “Being offensive is an offence”, adding: “Merseyside Police stand with and support the LGBTQI+ community, we will not tolerate hate crime on any level.”
In 2009, the same police force arrested and charged a Christian couple when a Muslim complained she was offended by their criticism of Islam. The case was dismissed.
Misleading
The force apologised for this latest incident, and removed the post from social media. But on the same day the billboard was launched, Alan McKeon, Sergeant for Community Policing, and Rachel Roberts, the force’s Hate Crime Co-ordinator, made a number of other misleading statements. ....
