Minister defends emissions strategy

National Development Commission Minister Kung Ming-hsin (龔明鑫) defended the government’s roadmap for achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, although serious questions remain about Taiwan’s short-term goals and the plan’s dependence on technology.
Based on the roadmap’s targets, renewables would cover 60 to 70 percent of Taiwan’s electricity needs in 2050, with another 9 to 12 percent coming from hydrogen and 20 to 27 percent from fossil fuels with carbon capture, utilization and storage capabilities.
There has been skepticism about Taiwan’s ability to meet the goals, but Kung said in an interview that the goals are similar to those of other countries, ....

Taichung ordinance aims at net zero emissions by 2050

The Taichung City Government on Friday said it would enshrine its goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 in a local ordinance.
It said that the ordinance would be introduced in the spirit of the COP26 climate summit, where world leaders in November last year agreed on a goal of cutting global emissions by 30 percent by 2030, with some countries setting later dates for themselves.
Although Taiwan did not participate in the UN summit, Taichung would require zero emissions from “energy production, industry, residential buildings, public transportation, agriculture and environmental sources” by 2050.
