Rachel Monger, representing LeadingAge Kansas, said it was essential, for the 2021 Legislature to grant adult care facilities immunity from COVID-19 lawsuits retroactive to March 2020 to create equity with hospitals and clinics provided that protection in terms of the pandemic.
TOPEKA Long-term care lobbyist Rachel Monger is convinced the Kansas law passed less than a year ago to limit civil liability of nursing homes during the pandemic fell far short.
Monger, speaking on behalf of LeadingAge Kansas’ 20,000 employees serving more than 25,000 older Kansans, said the affirmative-defense shield put in place during a special legislative session left facilities open to legal attacks. She said the compromise reached by Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly and the Republican-led Legislature amounted to “demoralizing punishment” for nursing homes caring for seniors during the public health crisis. ....

GREAT BEND – Golden Belt Gives 2020 campaigns raise over $249,000 for area non-profits Golden Belt Community Foundation just completed its seventh Giving Tuesday campaign, wrapping up and announcing the results during a Virtual Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Coffee Thursday morning.
During the regular Giving Tuesday Campaign, held November 1 to December 1, over 1,000 gifts were made to support 93 central Kansas charitable organizations and endowment funds raising a total of $183,345.25.
“This year marked GBCF’s 7 th year to be a Giving Tuesday partner,” stated Mackenzie Mitchell, Development and Communications Coordinator, “and again this year we invited all charitable organizations in Barton, Pawnee, Rush, and Stafford counties to participate.” ....

Schools revise quarantine rules
The state updated its COVID-19 statistics this week and announced that a weekly vaccine update will be published on its website every Wednesday by 5 p.m. in English and Spanish. Meanwhile, Great Bend USD 428 revised its quarantine rules.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov) reports there have been 179,803 COVID-19 cases statewide this year, resulting in 5,654 hospitalizations and 1,941 deaths as of 9 a.m. Wednesday. There were 5,778 new cases, 85 new deaths and 145 new hospitalizations reported since Monday, Dec. 7.
KDHE shows 1,859 total cases for Barton County and 834 for Pawnee County. ....
