PULASKI COUNTY, Va. – Thursday marks 10 years since the most destructive tornado to ever hit the New River Valley. The towns of Pulaski and Draper will never forget this day.

These two infamous tornadoes occurred in the early evening hours of April 8, 2011, around 7:30 p.m. Nine people were injured, but thankfully, no one died. However, both towns reported severe damage. ....

It’s the start of another week in our corner of the Commonwealth and that means a new edition of the WSLS Beyond The Forecast newsletter! This week is a special one as it’s the first time we’re dedicating a few days to talk about severe weather awareness.
There will be five topics covered this week: the difference between a watch and a warning, tornadoes, severe storms, flooding and lightning.

Happy Monday! The warmer temperatures of spring will also come with the return of thunderstorms to our corner of the Commonwealth. We’ll likely have to deal with some of those storms becoming severe over the next few months. You have the opportunity to help us and the National Weather Service protect the public!
The NWS office in Blacksburg is hosting a virtual storm spotter training class next Monday night. It’s happening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and you can register for the webinar here.
You might be asking: why should I help you guys do your job? Well, we need storm spotters to help us cover severe weather for a few reasons. ....
