Highlander Lloyd Kao / The Highlander On Wednesday, March 31, ASUCR held their first meeting of spring quarter where they discussed updates to the upcoming ASUCR Elections and passed a resolution advocating for a safe, in-person graduation ceremony. Elections Director Lama Yassine updated the senate on the timeline for the upcoming ASUCR elections. Next week, the elections committee will begin hosting Candidates Conventions for both senators and those running for the executive branch, giving each candidate the opportunity to discuss their platforms. Highlander Lloyd Kao / The Highlander At the ASUCR meeting held on Wednesday, Feb. 3, the Vice Chair of the Student Voice Committee Mark Hanin, shared the results of the Classroom Etiquette and Academic Experiences Survey conducted last November. The purpose of the survey was to gather feedback on UCR students’ academic experiences and on topics such as inclusivity and classroom etiquette; its goal is to ensure that UCR students are able to succeed in the classroom. Through the survey, which received 139 responses, the committee learned that the majority of students rate their academic experiences and inclusivity experiences at UCR a 4 out of 5. Fifty-three percent of students reported having negative experiences while at UCR. ....
Highlander Lloyd Kao /The Highlander On Thursday, Jan. 21, UCR ARTS hosted their first Third Thursday Talk of the year. This live virtual event featured talented artists who discussed their insights on their work for “Art in the Plague Year,” a virtual exhibition featuring pieces from over 600 artists worldwide. The event started at 6 p.m. It was held on Zoom but was also live streamed on the UCR ARTSblock’s Facebook account. Douglas McCulloh, a photographer and one of the curators for the event, praised many of the pieces in the exhibition and reflected on the creation of the exhibit itself. McCulloh said, “It’s a really collaborative project” and that it “began with the virus and like the virus it eventually mutated.” He and some colleagues realized that people were still making art during the pandemic, and they wanted to create a platform for everyone’s art to be shared. ....
