The Pfizer vaccine is now available to children ages 12-15, and local health departments are opening up appointments and walk-ins to that age group. Meanwhile the state is urging parents to get the vaccine for all kids ages 12 and up.
The past year has been rough on all of us, but our kids are feeling it too. Lisa Sanchez Metropoulos is a parent who says the pandemic has been hard on her son. “Over the past year I feel like all I am saying to him is ‘no.’ No to sports, no to friends, no to family.” ....

Shot in the arm for teens getting first COVID vaccines in Detroit


With the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s approval Wednesday of Pfizer s COVID-19 vaccines for those age 12 to 15, just under 500,000 more people in Michigan are now eligible for the vaccine, said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, Michigan s chief deputy director for health and a mother of two children.
And, Khaldun said, children also can get other vaccinations at the same time as they get their COVID-19 shot with their medical provider.
On Thursday, parents and teens headed out to vaccination clinics in metro Detroit to get their first of two shots.
Dia Berry of Dearborn Heights brought his twin 14-year-old daughters, Sirine and Elissar Berry, to a Walgreens pharmacy on Ecorse Road in Taylor on Thursday morning to get their first doses.  ....

Nina and Layla Attisha have missed out on a lot of “critical parts of being a regular kid” over the last 14 months, including in-person schooling, sports, summer camps and sleepovers.
So when the 15- and 12-year-old sisters became eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine this week, their mother said they jumped at the opportunity. They were among the first teens in their age bracket to get a first dose of Pfizer’s vaccine Thursday, May 13, in Bloomfield Hills. ....
