cars back on its tracks. good evening. everybody, i m vicki liviakis and i m grant lotus thank you for joining us tonight for kron 4 news at 8 our top story tonight once again a dense layer of smoke from dozens of wildfires. they darken the skies around the bay area again today, this is a live look at the bay bridge. those lights really illuminating just how smoky and hazy it is once again. yeah well the orange glow from yesterday is mostly gone the poor air quality sure isn t. we kick off our kron 4 team coverage with the latest air quality checked around the bay from chief meteorologist lawrence karnow lawrence yeah that s kind of the irony we don t have that orange glow today, there s less smoke in our atmosphere, but the smoke that you re next all the way down to the surface and the spore quality out there right now and you can see out toward sfo you see the lights out there you see the haze that smoke down below as a small continue just to flow around the bay area and
2020 last week. police chief shawny williams says that 16 of those deaths were african americans kron four s dan thorn joins us now live from the late show with more on how the city plans to stop the shootings. dan obviously easier said than done. that s right vicki in grand the police chief and other city leaders are looking into making community connections out here they re calling it operation peace because the chief believes that they cannot enforce their way out of this problem meanwhile, the vallejo police officers association has made it clear that by hiring more police officers they will be able to curb crime in the city. in an effort to hold violent crime in valais how the police department launches a new initiative operation peace aims to stop a significant spike in shootings unfortunately when we look at gun violence in our city the last. this last august we had up to 209 shootings in our city. we ve had 21 murders. that s a 300% increase from last year police c
aloft on or orange wednesday yesterday you started to detect it more and more as you step outside. this morning even worse yet as definitely hazy and also a little foggy there at the coastline. you notice that some of our worst air quality is right up and down the coast, not just for inland valleys and there s a reason for this. let s look a look take a look at this satellite imagery from noaa right here you can see just a few days ago that smoke that was blanketing the entirety of the west coast here. now what you re also noticing is those oregon wildfires, where s that smoke heading right out in the pacific. it s now being pushed right into the coast. that s why some of our coastal areas in the bay itself. actually has some of the worst air quality this morning and that s only making for more smoke pushing into the bay as compared to what we already had on top of us which is blocked out sunlight for a couple of days now so very poor air quality and for 2 reasons california
