The FBI, CISA, and US Department of Treasury shared detailed info on malicious and fake crypto-trading applications used by North Korean-backed state hackers to steal cryptocurrency from individuals and companies worldwide in a joint advisory published on Wednesday.
These cryptocurrency trading apps were developed and injected with AppleJeus malware by a DPRK state-sponsored threat actor known as Lazarus Group (tracked by the U.S. as HIDDEN COBRA).
These cyber actors have targeted organizations for cryptocurrency theft in over 30 countries during the past year alone, the advisory reads. ....

Kinoite: Immutable Fedora variant with KDE Plasma desktop on the way

Better security and application management, but compatibility can be an issue

Red Hat s Fedora project is to add a new variant called Kinoite, an immutable desktop operating system alongside the existing Silverblue, which runs GNOME desktop.
The idea behind an immutable operating system is that it is mounted read-only; also, conceptually, it is not patched but rather is replaced when it needs to be updated, in the same way as a container. This has obvious security advantages, as well as making features like rollback easier to implement.
Silverblue was introduced in early 2018 based in part on an earlier project called Atomic Host. The first full release of Silverblue was as part of Fedora 29 in October 2018. Fedora CoreOS, designed for hosting containers, is also designed as an immutable operating system. Both CoreOS and Silverblue are presented as emerging Fedora editions ra ....

Patches submitted by Microsoft for the next version of the Linux kernel, 5.12, add the ability to boot the OS as the root partition on its Hyper-V hypervisor.
The new hyperv-next patches follow an RFC last September stating that the company wants to create a complete virtualization stack with Linux and Microsoft Hypervisor.
In November Microsoft added a userspace interface for creating and running guest virtual machines while running on the Microsoft hypervisor that depends on root partition support.
Although Linux already runs well on Hyper-V, the architecture requires that the Microsoft hypervisor has at least one parent, or root, partition, running Windows. This root partition has direct access to the hardware, and creates the child partitions that run the guest operating systems such as Windows or ....

US indicts North Korean hackers for stealing $1.3 billion

US indicts North Korean hackers for stealing $1.3 billion
By
The U.S. Department of Justice has charged three North Koreans for stealing $1.3 billion in money and cryptocurrency in attacks on banks, the entertainment industry, cryptocurrency companies, and more.
The defendants are state-sponsored North Korean hackers and members of Reconnaissance General Bureau (RGB) units, a North Korean military intelligence agency that has engaged in criminal hacking operations.
These North Korean military hacking units are known by multiple names in the cybersecurity community, including Lazarus Group and Advanced Persistent Threat 38 (APT38), the DOJ said.
According to DOJ, the three North Koreans have been participating in a wide-ranging criminal conspiracy to conduct a series of destructive cyberattacks, to steal and extort more than $1.3 billion of money and cryptocurrency from financial institutions and companies, to create and deploy multiple malicious cryptocurre ....
