Armed bandits attack Benue patrol team, kill one, injure another On By Peter Duru, Makurdi A member of Benue Live stock Guard has been reportedly shot dead while an official of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, attached to the Agro-Rangers sustained injuries when suspected armed bandits ambushed them while on patrol at Mballagh Ward in the outskirts of Makurdi. The team was said to be on routine patrol of parts of Makurdi, the state capital on Friday when they came under severe attack at about 4 pm. Addressing the media on the development, Security Adviser to the state governor, Col. Livestock guards in conjunction with agro rangers are responsible for the implementation of the state anti-open grazing law. The incident, according to a source, happened around 6pm at Mballah Council Ward in Makurdi. Narrating how the attack was carried out, the Commander of livestock guards, Linus Zaki, said the suspects laid in ambush for the guards who were on patrol. Zaki said, “The armed men came in through some areas where they knew troops were not stationed. We (livestock guards) were coming on motorcycles and suddenly heard gunshots from both sides of the road. They succeeded in killing one of our guards and injured one other.” ....

Hemba explained that the incident happened on Friday about 4:00pm while the deceased alongside his colleagues and some personnel of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence (NSCDC) were on routine patrol. He said the men were returning from the remote area behind the NASME barracks when the gunmen ambushed the troop, killing one and wounding the other. He added that the wounded has been taken to the hospital for treatment while the body of the deceased deposited in the morgue. The special adviser observed that the pattern used by the bandits in series of attacks in recent times include opening gunfire on unsuspecting villagers who did nothing to provoke them. ....
