Is it possible for Iowa City schools to keep clean energy pledge?

90% of emissions from the Iowa City Community School District come from buildings and facilities. Of emissions from buildings and facilities, 26% are from old equipment that relies on natural gas. Installing a district-owned solar farm would cost approximately $3.375 million and 7.5 acres of land. In 2006, 5% of electricity generation in Iowa came from wind; in 2019, it was 41%. For those concerned by the warming climate, 2050 is not so far away. At the behest of student activists, Iowa City school officials have promised to reach for an ambitious goal: achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Doing so would offset 16,599 metric tons of greenhouse gases seeping into the air each year  equal to the amount of emissions produced by 3,586 cars annually.
