Dass „Mahlzeit“ um die Mittagszeit herum auch als reine Grußformel verwendet wird – also dann, wenn weit und breit kein Essen und vielleicht nicht einmal eine Essenspause in Sicht ist – scheint zunächst merkwürdig. Es ist aber einer Lücke im System der Grußformeln des Deutschen geschuldet: Während wir morgens und am frühen Vormittag (bis etwa 11 Uhr) das förmliche „Guten Morgen“ oder das informelle „Morgen“ haben und abends (etwa ab 17 Uhr) das förmliche „Guten Abend“ oder „n’Abend“, gibt es für die Zeit dazwischen nur das ganztägig verwendbare und förmliche „Guten Tag“. ....
