Wilmington Journal's building saved through rousing campaign, telethon


WILMINGTON – “It’s the dawn of a better day for The Wilmington Journal.”
That’s how Paul Jervay characterized the success of a recent telethon to help save the 93-year-old Wilmington newspaper serving the African-American community.
Stemming from a GoFundMe online fundraising launched in December, the telethon was seen as the finish line to raise $95,000 to allow the Wilmington Journal to buy its longtime Seventh Street home in order to do repairs.
In Saturday’s eight-hour Save The Wilmington Journal Building Telethon at Freedom Way Ministries, local hosts and special guests educated viewers and donors about the history and importance of the Journal, while also entertaining them. ....

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - WECT, along with representatives from Novant Health and New Hanover Regional Medical Center hosted a Facebook live forum on the COVID-19 vaccine. The discussion, which will include questions from viewers, is taking place Wednesday at 8 p.m. See below for live link.
The purpose of the forum is to have an open discussion about the COVID-19 vaccine and to address concerns about the safety of the injection.
Joshua Jones, a leading pharmacist at NHRMC will dispel myths that the vaccine contains the virus. Jones, who is African American, will also address the racial disparities as white people are vaccinated at a much higher rate than black people. ....
