City Council moves to rename middle school after the late Fred Kalisz

NEW BEDFORD  The New Bedford City Council voted unanimously Thursday night to begin the process of renaming one of the city s three middle schools after the late former Mayor Frederick Kalisz Jr.
Seven councilors  Ian Abreu, Naomi Carney, Maria Giesta, Brian Gomes, Linda Morad, William Markey and Scott Lima  filed the motion to rededicate one of the schools in his name during the council meeting.
Kalisz, who died at 63 from COVID-19 complications on Jan. 27, oversaw the construction of three new middle schools during his tenure as mayor from 1998 to 2006: Roosevelt Middle School, 2001; Normandin Middle School, 2003; and Keith Middle School, 2006.
The councilors wrote the new schools were the first to be constructed in almost 30 years as a result of Kalisz s unrelenting leadership and guidance. ....

Morad's Governing Is Irresponsible and Dangerous [OPINION]

By her own admission, New Bedford Councilor-at-Large Linda Morad has to vote no at every meeting, as evidenced at 1:56:45 of this recent meeting. This is a practice of governance is exercised by public officials who govern spitefully.
Officials that govern this way seem more interested in lording over their constituents than serving them. They might argue that they are doing it to make the hard choices, but voting no for the sake of it isn t discerning, it s the absence of discernment; it s being punitive toward the people who elected you and it could have devastating consequences for them. And in recent key votes and public statements, Councilor Morad has demonstrated a reckless abandonment of the public s well being. ....

Morad's Support Could Make Difference for New Bedford [OPINION]

The New Bedford City Council plans to vote on Thursday night on the first phase of a proposal that would convert a portion of the Whaling City Golf Course into an Advanced Manufacturing Campus. A unanimous vote in the affirmative could make a big difference.
A yes vote asks the Massachusetts Legislature to approve a home rule petition that permits the Mitchell Administration to use protected parkland at the golf course while converting city-owned land in Dartmouth to recreational use. It really does require an act of the legislature to get it done.
The vote to report the measure to the full council was 10-1 with only Councilor-at-Large Linda Morad opposed. Morad s opposition seemed odd as she proposed a very similar economic development strategy when she ran for mayor in 2011. But there it was. ....

Councilor Morad Can't Hide From Her Awful Comments [OPINION]

It’s been two weeks since New Bedford City Councilor Linda Morad took a hardline stance against her constituents with disabilities, and she wants you to forget that she did.
A quick recap: in a January 20 Traffic Commission hearing, I was speaking on behalf of a friend who was petitioning for a handicapped parking space in front of their home. This petitioner had several surgeries resulting in a rod through their midsection, and screws through their ankle, neck, and spine. The vote was 4-1 in favor for the petitioner but failed because five voters are needed to approve. The vote was essentially filibustered by Manny Silvia, a DPI superintendent known for flexing his power by being boisterous and unnecessarily contentious in Traffic Commission hearings – essentially, the Linda Morad of the Traffic Commission.  ....
