Print Ever since the slapstick “Vacation” franchise of the ‘80s, the dysfunctional family road trip has earned its place as a reliable Hollywood construct. At its best, it offers simple truths through easy laughs by pointing a mirror to our family’s familiar flaws. At its worst, in the case of flops like “RV” and “Johnson Family Vacation,” it relies on low-hanging humor usually a hapless father thrown into ill-fated stunts instead of locating real sincerity. The unwaveringly sweet, animated example “The Mitchells vs the Machines,” largely avoids the genre’s worst cliches for a tear-jerking adventure ripe with apocalyptic fun. ....
If you're looking for something to watch this weekend, you should seriously consider "The Mitchells vs. the Machines," which releases on Netflix on April 30. Yes, it's animated and yes, ....
CST Netflix presents a film directed by Michael Rianda and written by Rianda and Jeff Rowe. Rated PG (for action and some language). Running time: 114 minutes. Available Friday on Netflix. Director Mike Rianda’s film, produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, shares much of the DNA of Lord and Miller’s other cartoon adventures (“The Lego Movie,” “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”) in its ability to remake movie cliches with madcap irreverence, youthful zeal and a contemporariness that often eludes less freewheeling films. “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” which debuts Friday on Netflix (after originally being set for theatrical release from Sony Pictures), manages to spin through a sincere father-daughter relationship, our technology addictions, Instagram jealousy and general feelings of inadequacy while breezing though an end-of-the-world plot accidentally initiated by a reckless tech CEO. Oh, there are maniacal Furbys, too. ....
National Lampoon’s Vacation The Mitchells, much like the Griswolds of National Lampoon’s Vacation, are your average American dysfunctional family. Try-hard dad, Rick (Danny McBride) and nerdy teenage daughter, Katie (Abbi Jacobson), really don’t get each other: he’s an outdoorsman and she just wants to make movies. All the while mum, Linda (Maya Rudolph) and dinosaur-obsessed younger brother, Aaron (Michael Rianda) struggle to try and maintain the peace at the dinner table. When Katie gets admitted to film school, she feels like she’s finally found her tribe and can’t wait to ditch home (and dad) to start her new life. But poor, sentimental, misguided Rick lovingly sabotages her first glorious chance at freedom by cancelling her one-way plane ticket, forcing Kate to trade in Freshers Week for a farewell cross-country family road trip. ....
