$1 million donation will fund scholarships for MU education students
The first recipient of a University of Missouri scholarship for students preparing to become elementary teachers on Thursday said it would help relieve some of the financial stress of student debt.
Being a teacher is really special and is something I ve wanted to do since I was a first- grader, said Shelby Johnson, a junior elementary education major from Parker, Colorado.
A special first-grade teacher sparked her passion for education, she said, while shedding a few tears.
Thank you for celebrating teachers, Johnson told the donors who made her scholarship possible. We need them and they re so, so important. ....

30 years later: former astronaut, retired MU professor reflects on time in space

Alan Shepard became the first American to travel in space on May 5, 1961.
Former University of Missouri professor and retired NASA Astronaut Linda Godwin said Shepard s mission made a lasting impact on space explorations that followed even hers.
For one thing, it stood out, Godwin said. We ve had to start with that step, to move along and get to be where we are.
Godwin was only 8 years old when Shepard took flight, and she remembers being fascinated.
When I was a kid at that age, I didn t have any clue that I could do that, she said. They didn t have any women, and it seemed very far away from the environment where I was growing up. ....

It was the height of the Cold War and the beginning of what came to be called the Space Race 60 years ago on May 5, 1961, when Alan Shepard was launched into space on a 15-minute suborbital flight.
The achievement marked the start of manned space flight for the U.S., coming less than a month after Yuri Gagarin orbited the planet for what was then the Soviet Union. That was on April 12, 1961.
Linda Godwin was an 8-year-old girl growing up in Jackson when the first manned U.S. space flight occurred.

Power of Women summit meant to help women succeed with scholarships

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - Leaders at Southeast Missouri State University geared up for their annual Power of Women Summit on Wednesday, April 28.
Some successful Southeast graduates will speak at the virtual event.
”It takes a while for women and young women to realize these career opportunities are there,” said Dr. Linda Godwin, retired Astronaut and Southeast graduate.
She’s one of the keynote speakers at Wednesday’s Summit. ....
