The normal way to start off a panel is to let each of the panelists have an opportunity to comment on what they have heard each other say. Before we go to general questions, does anybody want to comment on anybody elses talk before we turn to the questions from the audience . Well, its, i think, pretty clear from johns talk that john and i have a little bit of a different take on a couple of things. But here is one of the things that i will argue. Sure. I dont think that the soldiers becoming republicans or how they voted is hol wholly to down. I think its more of a bottom up experience. Sheer what i think happens. Here is my theory on this. Is that the 1862 election does not go well for republicans, but it goes very well for copperheads. By that time, i think that is a wakeup call for the soldiers that this group that has been railing against the war and against lincoln, rather than being this fringe group that i think the soldiers and many other people had regarded them as, the soldi

[laughter] im the codirector of the Lincoln Studies Center in illinois. It is my privilege to introduce the first speaker in the 2015 Abraham Lincoln institute symposium. He is a young scholar. He has already earned an array of honors. He was educated at penn state where he took his bachelors degree in two dozen one, and the receipt of maryland where he earned a masters degree in 2003, and a phd in 2008. The department of history maryland awarded him a price in potable history. His doctoral dissertation earned a prestigious prize and thousand 10. He has already authored several books. Including to lincoln titles most recently, emancipation, and the union army and reelection of lincoln. More than two dozen articles have appeared under his name in scholarly journals and Popular History magazines. In 2005, he won the john t hubble prize for the bes
